Peonies and dahlias are among the most sought-after flowers in floral design, each known for their distinctive beauty and presence. Because both are highly seasonal, their availability plays an important role in how and when they are used.

Peonies

Peonies are a hallmark of late spring and early summer, typically available from late April through June. Their soft, full blooms and delicate fragrance make them a favorite for weddings and gatherings during this window.

Their season is brief, which makes them more limited and often more expensive outside of peak availability. They are also more delicate than many other blooms, with a shorter vase life once cut. Even so, their fleeting nature is part of their appeal, offering a softness and romance that is difficult to replicate.

For clients hoping to feature peonies, timing is key. Designing within their natural season ensures the highest quality and the most beautiful expression of the flower.

Dahlias

Dahlias arrive later in the season, beginning in mid to late summer and continuing through early fall, typically July through October. They are known for their incredible range of shapes, sizes, and colors, bringing depth, texture, and a more sculptural feel to floral designs.

Like peonies, dahlias can be sensitive once cut, but their variety and visual impact make them a staple for late summer and autumn events. They are often more accessible during their season and offer a wide range of tones, from soft neutrals to rich, saturated hues.

Designing with the season in mind

At Cedar Rae Floral, we design with seasonality at the forefront. Working with flowers at their natural peak allows for better quality, stronger performance, and a more cohesive overall design.

When a specific flower falls outside of its season, we guide clients toward thoughtful alternatives that achieve a similar look and feel while maintaining the integrity of the design.

Peonies and dahlias each bring something unique to the table. When timed well, they can define the entire floral story of an event in a way that feels effortless and true to the season.
